"Yes I have, but not sexual discrimination. I resent it when I refer a patient to a specialist and the response letter from that specialist is addressed to one of the DOCTORS with whom I work!!! This occurs even when my patient has never seen one of the docs. What's up with that??? Does anyone else have similar problems? If so, how do you deal with it, if at all?"
"Started my career at an ED…all of our PAs were female and almost every single pelvic pain, vaginal bleed or any other complaint of similar nature went to us when the main Doc was male. When our Doc was female I did not note that trend!!! Come on fellas…a patient is a patient regardless of chief complaint!!!! Outside that venue…should we talk about the difference in pay from female to male?????? A question for another day I suppose!"
"I am a FNP that works in a undeserved area that has mostly black employees. I have difficulty in the working relationships as I am white and higher in the chain of command. It has been difficult to over come these prejudices and barriers. I succeed."
"There is discrimination because of gender but also because of medical history and medical problems. Some diseases are more acceptable than others. The medical and nursing profession with all of their knowledge is still discriminatory based on diseases and illnesses, many of which are beyond our control and which we have dedicated our lives to treat."
"At this moment I am searching for positions and although age discrimination is illegal, I am sure it is one reason I am not getting called for second interviews or getting positions. I have almost 17 years experience as an Adult and Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner and many years of Registered Nurse Experience prior to that."
"Hired into hospital with mostly female RN's. Lot's of harrassment from backward female DON who seemed to want male RN's to fail. Gender-discrimination at it's best."
"I am a male PA and to the best of my knowledge, have not been on the receiving end of overt discrimination as a health care provider."
"I have experienced discrimination in the workplace. Primarily the discrimination has been gender based. However, as a subset of this, I believe the strongest discrimination I have endured is that of being a nurse. I am a family Nurse practitioner. I graduated with a 4.0. I have been a nurse for 17 years and an FNP for eight. I still am treated "less than" and spoken to in a manner that is condescending to my gender and my profession."
"The male providers are routinely treated with more respect especially by management and nurses. When they ask the nurses to do something, they get a much better response than when the female providers do."
