The nurse practitioner provides advanced practice nursing care for employees, spouses and dependents in an industrial setting to include complete physical with appropriate diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care as established in written protocol. Specific duties include patient assessment, ordering and evaluating appropriate laboratory tests, prescribing medications, referrals to primary care providers or other specialist as needed. The nurse practitioner works closely with the employee's primary care provider in providing basic family practice health care to employees while they are at work. An emphasis is placed on the management of basic chronic health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia in an effort to reduce health care costs for the employer. The nurse practitioner may be involved in developing, implementing and evaluating individual health education and health promotion programs for employees, spouses and dependants at the worksite as well as for the community on occasion.
